Navy Rum is all Rum with more than 57.1% abv. The reason for the high alcohol content turns out to be a practical one. Rum was stored in wooden barrels together with the gunpowder below deck. In case the rum barrels started leaking and soaking into the gunpowder, the alcohol content had to be at least 57.1%. Anything below that and the gunpowder would not burn.
